5 Tips to Stay on Track Through the Holidays!

tone-it-up-express-10

Have you ever wondered about the best way to stay on track during the holiday season? Aside from keeping up with your healthy lifestyle as much as possible, there are a few key tips to keep in mind as we gear up for the merry season.

Today, we’re sharing our top 5 tips for staying slim through the festivities!

Never arrive to your holiday party hungry.

We oftentimes see friends make the mistake of eating less during the day in order to “save up calories,” but this strategy usually backfires. Feeling super hungry, having a cocktail and having unlimited access to amazing food isn’t usually a good combo.

Instead, eat regular, healthy meals throughout the day and have a light, protein rich snack before the fun begins. Pre-party noshes that make the ideal snack include: protein shake, an apple with a little almond butter, raw veggies with hummus or a small handful of trail mix! The key here is to include protein. Since protein takes longer to digest, it’s more satiating than a starchier snack. This means, you’ll be able to focus on your friends and not the buffet table.

If you’re in a hurry, simply mix up almond milk, Perfect Fit Protein and some fruit for a tasty smoothie that’s really great for your body!

Moderation is Key

One amazing trick we’ve learned is to keep a glass in our hands for most of the party. It doesn’t have to be a cocktail (although it totally can be, just remember to have a glass of water in between each drink. And try to stick to just 2-3 drinks). For cocktails try to stick to clear liquors like vodka mixed with soda water. You can even mix in a variety of colorful fruits for added flavor. We love a champagne spritzer with equal parts champagne and sparkling water.

This tip helps keep your hands occupied, so you’re less likely to mindlessly nibble as you mingle. When you do nibble, the best party foods to enjoy are lean proteins like shrimp or skewers with any veggies. You can of course also enjoy a few bites of whatever appeals to you.

Sweat it out, no matter what!

The ultimate way to stay healthy this holiday season is to make your workouts a non-negotiable priority. Wake up a little bit earlier every day to move and sweat.

Even if you just have 30 minutes for a run or even less for a toning routine, staying active every day is key!

Not only does this ensure your sexy holiday attire still fits, but it also helps reduce stress and improve your immune system. If you just have a short amount of time, that’s okay, just stay on track!

Treat yourself!

One of the best motivators for us to get up and get to the gym every morning is having cute fitness gear! Knowing we have flattering pants and fun tops to rock during our workouts makes us want to get out there and complete it! Whatever it is that will push you to get that sweat session in, is fair game. Whether it’s new music, new workout gear or a reward mani/pedi, think of it as investing in your health… and in your bombshell body!

Indulge in healthier sweet treats!

Whether it’s cookies or chocolate you love, there are some really simple ways to make healthier varieties. While it’s totally okay to treat yourself to goodies you really enjoy, it’s also fun to create new versions to share with friends and at the office! One thing we love during the holidays is peppermint bark and our TIU approved variety is out-of-this-world good.

T I U  P E P P E R M I N T  B A R K

Peppermint-Bark-feature

Layer 1:

  • 12 oz of dark chocolate chips or 2 high quality bars, broken into pieces
  • 1/2 tsp of Peppermint Extract
  • 1/4 tsp Pink Himalayan or Sea Salt

Layer 2:

  • 3/4 cup coconut butter
  • 4-6 drops vanilla stevia or 1/2 packet to taste
  • 1 organic Candy Cane, crushed

Directions

Create a double boiler to melt the chocolate: bring a pot of water to a boil, reduce to very low and rest a larger bowl on top. Add the chocolate, peppermint extract and salt to the bowl, allowing it all to melt. Mix until smooth, and remove from heat promptly.

Line an 8 x 8 baking dish with a large piece of parchment paper or foil and pour the chocolate mixture inside. Use a spatula to spread out. Place your baking dish in the freezer for at least 15 minutes as you prepare the second layer.

For the second layer, make sure your coconut butter is soft. If it’s freshly made it will be soft and perfect. If it’s store bought, you’ll need to microwave it for about 1 minute to soften. (Also, be sure to stir it as well. Just like with natural nut butters, the oil can separate). Mix the soft coconut butter with stevia and then pour over chilled and hardened first layer. Sprinkle with crushed candy canes and place back in the freezer for another 5-10 minutes to set. Once solid, use the sides of the parchment or foil to lift out the block. Break into rustic pieces or use a knife to cut desired sized squares. Enjoy right away or store in fridge.

Who doesn’t love a piece of chocolate once in a while… or okay, everyday!? If you’ve ever wished there was a healthier version you could indulge in with no regrets, you’re in luck! Today, Ilana from LaurenConrad.com is sharing what we think will become one of our new favorite treats. And yes, these are totally TIU approved!

Hi TIU team! It’s Ilana. I have a pretty serious sweet tooth, but most of the year I manage to curb my sugar cravings quite well. During the holiday season however, all bets are off. When you’re constantly surrounded by candy and baked goods, it can seem impossible not to indulge once in a while. To stay on track I’ve taken to enjoying lighter versions of my favorite treats, like this healthier alternative to my chocolate habit…

Goji-chocolate-lauren-conrad-tone-it-up-3

Enter my latest creation: Guilt-Free Goji Berry Chocolate Bars. Making homemade chocolate is so much easier than you might think. And unlike most store-bought bars, these chocolates are free from refined sugar and full of the health benefits of raw cacao. Plus, the addition of goji berries packs in loads of antioxidants and essential amino acids.

Here’s how to make them…

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup melted coconut oil
  • ½ cup real maple syrup
  • 1 cup cacao powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp. Himalayan pink salt
  • handful of goji berries

Instructions

Combine coconut oil, maple, cacao, vanilla, and Himalayan pink salt in a bowl. Mix well. Pour the mixture onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet to make bars, or into a mold to make bite-size truffles (a silicone ice tray works well). Sprinkle goji berries or other fillings on top (some of them will sink in on their own). Allow the chocolate to harden in the fridge for at least two hours. Enjoy!

It’s that easy! If you don’t have goji berries on hand, feel free to experiment with other dried fruit, nuts, or seeds of your choice. I also made some bars with almonds in them, and they were absolutely delicious. You can even break up a homemade bar to be healthier chocolate chips that you can then use in other recipes.

Lauren and I could seriously not stop eating them at our photo shoot!
